Bawburgh professional Chris Potter sums up the summer academy's achievements
The Academy has now ended. 02/10/05

The aim of The Academy is to help realise the potential of budding young golfers and to provide a resource to readers on the game of golf.

Charlotte, click to see her pageCharlotte Hatch
Charlotte started the year without a handicap but has now secured a club handicap of 43.
She won the local qualifier and the regional qualifier of the national Wee Wonders competition and finished 4th overall in her age group – the final of which was held at the home of golf St Andrews.
It is a huge achievement when you bear in mind that Charlotte broke her collar bone at the beginning of the year and has managed to bounce back in style. Size, again, is the only thing stopping her lowering her handicap.

Learn about JakeJake Metcalf
Jake has shown massive improvement during his time with the Academy.
Jake, 9, is not massively tall for his age but his will to succeed and determination make him a very good prospect.
He has managed to reduce his handicap this summer from 42 to 29, which is an incredible achievement.
He won the Costessey Park Junior Open with a gross 87, net 55 and he has also won two junior club competitions.

Jennifer, click to see her pageJennifer Hide
Jennifer has reduced her handicap from 24 to 18.8 and has become involved with the county girls set-up playing three times and winning once.
Jennifer has really put in the hard work over the summer and is starting to reap the rewards.
She has worked very hard on her short game and her pitching and putting is where she has really made in-roads. So many shots can be wasted on or around the green.
Distance off the tee is still a problem but this will come given time.

Jordan, click to see his pageJordan Mann
Jordan has achieved a club handicap of 45 and has won his last two junior club events in his age group, which for a young lad of seven years of age is a massive achievement.
To put it into perspective Jordan hits his driver about as far as an adult might hit their wedge or nine iron, so to go around 18 holes in 115 is remarkable. You try going round the course with just you nine iron and putter for company!
Jordan faces an uphill battle until he has a growth spurt, but clearly demonstrates the will to succeed.

Kane, click to see his pageKane Sawyer
Kane has shown consistent improvement and had reduced his men’s handicap from 22 to 17.
Kane is part of the under-14s county squad, playing well above his age group. Again, he will see his handicap tumble with a growth spurt as many holes are out of reach for an 11-year-old in regulation figures.
Kane has a great eye for the ball and is a very clean striker, which will all stand him in good stead for the future.

Matthew, click to see his pageMatthew Bacon
All of the Academy students have improved throughout the year with consistency being the key.
There have been some notable achievements with many now involved with county junior coaching schemes. Last year’s Norfolk Nippers champion Matthew Bacon has reduced his handicap from 18 to single figures and lost in a play-off in his junior club championship – it’s a brilliant achievement for a 13-year-old to now hold a single figure men’s handicap. As Matthew grows physically his handicap should tumble even further.

Racheal, click to see her pageRachel Hide
Rachel has shown a tremendous improvement and is much, much more consistent.
She has gone from a club handicap of 54 to be close to achieving a Ladies Golf Union handicap of around 38.
This score would be reduced dramatically if she can continue to improve her putting.
Again, Rachel’s size and strength will restrict her pushing too far ahead as the long distances of the par 4s and 5s remain out of reach.
