Your tributes to Johnny Gavin

Tributes
have been paid to Norwich City's all-time record goalscorer,
Johnny Gavin, who has died at the age of 79. The outside-right
was a legend at Carrow Road scoring 132 goals in just 338
games during two spells with the club between 1949 and 1958.

I remember with pleasure the performances
of Johnny Gavin on the right wing at Carrow Road in the
1940's and 50's.

My first recollection of Johnny was
his playing for a Norwich City X1 against the City of Norwich
School first XI on the school playing fields at Eaton Road
in 1948, probably on a Thursday afternoon in September.
I have often wondered if that was the first time Johnny
pulled on a Norwich City shirt to play a competitive game.
Does anyone out there know if it was his first time?
John Brister
Very sad to learn of the death of the
legendary Johnny Gavin. I never had the pleasure of seeing
him play but his late brother Mick, who was a local postman,
would bring me programmes of Norwich and Tottenham matches
when I was very young. I still treasure those memories.
I felt close to Johnny after researching the history of
Limerick senior soccer from 1937 to 1984 some years ago.
I will write a tribute to him in this week's Limerick Leader.
Many fans have been in contact with me since Johnny's death
and I have referred them to your excellent piece on the
Norwich Evening News. My sympathy to the family. May he
rest in peace.

My dad started taking me to Carrow Road
in the 1950,s,when I was about 7. My first favourite player
was Johnny Gavin, and I always remember the expectant roar
of the crowd ,everytime he got the ball and set off down
the wing.Fond memories. Rest in peace Johnny.
